Synthetic grass lasts or fails on the base beneath it. The existing lawn, roots and a few inches of soil come out first, so the finished turf sits level with the paving and beds instead of sitting above them. A crushed base goes in over the excavation, compacted in layers and graded with enough fall that rainwater runs off the surface and drains through the backing instead of standing in low spots. In Sarasota that grading matters as much as the turf itself, because the rain arrives in short, heavy bursts.
The perimeter is held with edging or fixed into the adjacent hardscape so the turf cannot creep or lift. Panels are laid running the same direction so the blades all lean the same way, then seamed, fastened and brushed through with infill, which weighs the turf down and holds the blades upright.
Turf earns its keep in the places grass gives up: around pools, where clippings and worn patches are the usual complaint, and in strips under trees where real turf stays thin no matter what you do. Once it is in, there is no irrigation to run and no mowing. It still needs occasional attention: rinsing it down, brushing the high-traffic lines back up, and keeping leaf litter off the surface so water keeps draining through.
