French drain installation in Sarasota
A French drain is a perforated pipe laid in a gravel-filled
trench and wrapped in filter fabric. Water in the surrounding
soil moves into the gravel, finds the pipe, and runs downhill to
an outfall instead of sitting in the low spot it collected in.
The fabric is what keeps the system alive: without it, sand and
silt migrate into the gravel and the drain silts up within a few
seasons.
Three things decide whether one works. The trench has to be deep
enough to intercept water below the root zone. It has to hold
consistent fall along its whole length, because a flat or
back-pitched section turns the pipe into a holding tank. And it
needs somewhere legitimate to discharge: a swale, a street or
curb inlet, a dry well, or a lower part of the lot that can
absorb the volume. Running a drain to a spot with no outfall just
relocates the puddle.
A French drain is the right answer when water is coming up
through saturated soil, when the low area cannot practically be
raised, or when the pooling sits against a slab, a pool deck, or
a foundation. When the yard simply slopes the wrong way and there
is somewhere better for water to go, regrading is cheaper, faster,
and usually the better call. Often the right fix is both:
regrade the surface, then catch what the surface cannot move.
Most residential installs are a one to two day job. We locate
irrigation lines and utilities first, trench, lay fabric and
gravel, set and slope the pipe, backfill, and restore the turf or
bed over the top.

Local drainage problems are rarely about the yard being built
badly. They come from conditions specific to this part of Florida.
Lots here are flat, so there is very little natural fall to move
water off the property, and small settling changes are enough to
create a low spot that holds water.
The soil compounds it. Sandy topsoil drains quickly until it hits
a clay or hardpan layer underneath, at which point the water
stops moving down and starts spreading sideways. Add summer storm
volume that drops several inches in an hour, roof runoff dumped in
one concentrated place because downspouts end at the foundation,
and a water table that sits close to the surface near the coast,
and the ground simply runs out of capacity to absorb anything.

possible to see where water moves and where it stalls. The fix
is designed around the source of the problem, not just the
symptom — so it works in a five-inch rain, not just a light
shower.
