Landscape lighting design for Sarasota homes

A landscape lighting plan is not a matter of spacing fixtures evenly around the yard. It works in layers, and each layer does a different job. Path and step lighting is the functional layer: low output, close to the ground, placed so people can read the edge of a walkway or the nosing of a step without staring into a bulb. Accent lighting is the compositional layer, picking out the four or five things actually worth looking at after dark. Wash lighting is the background layer, putting soft light on a wall, a hedge, or a fence line so the yard has depth instead of ending in a black wall ten feet past the patio.

The most common mistake is lighting everything. When every plant and every corner gets a fixture, nothing stands out and the yard reads as flat and over-lit. A good plan deliberately leaves dark space between the lit elements, because the contrast is what makes the lit ones look good.

Glare control is the other half of the job. Fixtures aimed toward the house put light straight into living room and bedroom windows. Fixtures near a property line spill onto the neighbours. Both are solved at install time with shrouds, glare guards, careful aiming angles, and by tucking fixtures behind planting so you see the light and not the source.

Palm and tree uplighting

Uplighting palms is the signature move in Sarasota landscape lighting, and it is mostly about placement and beam spread. Fixtures usually go at or just outside the base, set back far enough that the beam covers the trunk rather than blowing out the first few feet. Two or three fixtures around a single specimen palm read much better than one, because a single source flattens the trunk and throws a hard shadow.

Beam spread should match the tree. Tall, narrow palms want a tight spot that carries light all the way up to the canopy. Broad shade trees like live oaks want a wider flood that fills the canopy instead of drilling a bright column through it.

Trees grow, and lighting has to be revisited as they do. As a palm gains height the same fixture no longer reaches the fronds, and as a canopy widens the original aiming angle ends up lighting bare trunk. Re-aiming, and occasionally repositioning or relamping, keeps a system looking the way it did on day one.

Fixtures, transformers and salt air

Near the coast, fixture material is the difference between a system that lasts fifteen years and one that looks corroded in three. Cast brass and copper are the right choice on Siesta Key, Longboat Key, and any salt-exposed lot; they weather to a patina rather than failing. Aluminium fixtures cost less and are fine further inland, but salt air pits and eats through them, usually at the seams and fasteners first.

Transformers need to be sized with headroom, typically loaded to around 80 percent of capacity so the system can take a few added fixtures later without a voltage drop across the run. They should be mounted off the ground on a wall or post, in a spot with service access, and away from irrigation spray. Multi-tap models let us compensate for voltage drop on longer runs.

LED lamps carry the whole system now. They pull a fraction of the wattage of the old halogen equivalents, run for tens of thousands of hours, and let more fixtures share one transformer. Control is handled with a timer, a photocell, or an astronomic timer that tracks sunset through the year so the yard is not coming on at the wrong hour every few weeks.

Maintaining outdoor lighting

Lighting is not a set-and-forget install. Once a year is enough for most systems: re-aim fixtures that have been knocked or grown past, replace any failed lamps, and clean the lenses, which haze over with salt and irrigation minerals. After a storm it is worth checking connections and buried splices, since standing water and shifted mulch are what typically take a run offline. We can handle this as a scheduled visit or fold it into an existing maintenance program.
